AI Market Trends: Identifying High-Demand AI Skills in the Workforce
In the heart of Europe, the German job market is witnessing a significant surge in the demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills. The Berlin-based company, Index Research, has recently unveiled the AI Competency Monitor, a comprehensive dashboard that provides insights into the most in-demand AI skills across various industries and regions in Germany.
The second quarter of this year has seen a remarkable increase in AI-related job postings. Deloitte, the auditing firm, advertised nearly 2,900 AI positions, marking a 58% increase from the first quarter of 2025. Following closely behind are Amazon and Siemens, with 868 and 764 AI positions respectively.
The IT industry leads the pack, with around 10,900 jobs requiring AI skills. Personnel service providers come in second, with almost 9,000 advertised positions for AI skills. Computer scientists and other ICT professionals dominate the scene, with over 20,300 jobs mentioning AI skills, followed by specialists in the areas of technical development, construction, and production control with over 10,800 jobs.
The AI Competency Monitor is an invaluable tool in assessing differences across various industries, fields, and quarters. It analyses data quarterly and compares it with the previous quarters, going back to Q1/2020. The data reveals expected peaks in 2023, when ChatGPT and similar topics became a broad topic in the job market.
The dashboard allows for specific filtering by industries, professions, regions, companies, and technologies. In the second quarter of this year, Docker was the most sought-after AI buzzword, with 14,500 positions, followed by Machine Learning (over 8,800 positions) and Artificial Intelligence (almost 6,000 positions).
Bavaria offers the most job offers with an AI reference, but Berlin has the highest penetration when calculated on the respective total number of job offers. The southern federal states and North Rhine-Westphalia dominate the demand for AI skills.
Jürgen Grenz, the CEO of Index Research, and Olga Golubchykova, the head of personnel market research at Index Research, are at the helm of this innovative project. The AI Competency Monitor shows how many job advertisements companies demand knowledge around Artificial Intelligence, providing a clear picture of the growing importance of AI in the German job market.
As major German technology and industrial firms like Bosch invest heavily in AI as a key future technology, it is expected that they are significant employers in the AI field. New platforms like OpenAI's Jobs Platform aim to connect AI-skilled professionals with employers, including smaller companies in Germany.
