Angry Constituents Yell at Republican Representative Bryan Steil During contentious Town Hall Over His Support for President Trump
Wisconsin Congressman Bryan Steil Booed at Town Hall Amidst Controversial Policies
In a heated town hall meeting at the Elkhorn Area High School auditorium, Wisconsin Congressman Bryan Steil found himself in the midst of a contentious and hostile environment. The event, Steil's first in-person gathering since January, was marked by strong opposition to his support for President Donald Trump's policies, particularly the tariff policy and the recent major budget and spending bill known as the “Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
The crowd, made up of approximately 250 people, expressed their disapproval of Steil's stance on various issues, including border security, tariffs, and the president's budget bill. The booing and jeering grew loud as Steil attempted to defend the policies, making it difficult for him to answer questions and address concerns.
Before the event, about 50 demonstrators protested Steil's support for the president's budget bill. The bill, which is estimated by the Congressional Budget Office to cause 10 million Americans to lose health insurance, has been criticized for substantial cuts to Medicaid and other services. Constituents described the proposed tariffs as "reckless" and "cost-raising."
The elderly man, one of the attendees, expressed his disappointment with Steil's representation of Walworth County, stating that Southeast Wisconsin has not been adequately represented. He threatened to work hard against Steil if he runs for any office in the future. Another woman suggested it was time for Steil to step down, while another criticized him for being a “rubber stamp” for Trump and the GOP, promoting a "billionaires-first agenda."
One woman even asked why ICE agents were wearing masks and were unidentified. Video footage of the town hall was obtained by MSNBC's Morning Joe, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on the incident.
Steil acknowledged that it's fine to disagree, but the crowd continued to yell, drowning out his attempts to answer. This town hall was the first in-person event for a Wisconsin Republican since March, when GOP leaders advised members to avoid such gatherings. Steil is one of two Wisconsin representatives that Democrats plan to target in the midterm elections.
Despite the hostile environment, a smaller, quieter group of supporters were also present, voicing their support for Steil and his policies. The town hall served as a reminder of the divided political landscape in Wisconsin and the nation as a whole.
