Ava Chessum from the class of '24 secures Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship
In an exciting turn of events, an Oberlin College student has been awarded the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) scholarship. This fellowship, lasting just over 11 months starting in July 2025, offers a unique opportunity for cultural exchange, improving language skills, and gaining international experience.
The CBYX fellowship consists of three distinct phases. The first phase involves two months of intensive German language classes, followed by a university study phase, where classes are taught in German. The final phase is an internship, chosen by the fellow, that allows them to delve deep into their chosen field – in this case, the arts and cultural sector outside of America.
The fellow, who has a strong passion for collection management, activation, and engagement, as well as museum education and administration, is particularly interested in learning about different art collecting institutions in Germany. Their art history honours thesis prepared them well for the self-directed nature of the fellowship.
The fellow's professional interests and goals were shaped by their time working at the Allen Memorial Art Museum. The fellowship aims to promote mutual exchange and allow fellows to learn about their career field in Germany. At the culmination of the program, the fellow plans to bring their learnings back to Oberlin.
It's worth noting that Oberlin did not influence the fellow to pursue this specific fellowship, but it undoubtedly played a role in shaping their decision. The fellow gained confidence in research and writing skills, academic independence, and delivery on big goals from their thesis.
The CBYX fellowship also offers insights into how other countries approach the arts and cultural heritage. The fellow hopes the fellowship will help them identify a specific subfield in the arts and cultural sector.
This opportunity will provide a wealth of knowledge and experiences, fostering a global perspective that will undoubtedly benefit the fellow in their future endeavours.
