Minsk State Linguistic University Renamed as Belarusian State University of Foreign Languages

The Minsk State Linguistic University, which has been operating since 1948, has undergone a significant change. As of August 6, 2025, the institution is officially known as the Belarusian State University of Foreign Languages (BSUFL).

The renaming was announced on the university's website and was recorded in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities and Individual Entrepreneurs by the Minsk City Executive Committee on August 8. The order for the renaming was issued by the Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus.

The new name, Belarusian State University of Foreign Languages, is likely to be more descriptive and modern, emphasizing the institution's specialization in foreign language education. This change could be a part of an institutional rebranding effort or a shift in academic focus.

The old name of the Minsk State Linguistic University, which was criticized by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko as inappropriate, may have contributed to the decision to rename the university. In 2024, during a visit to the university, Lukashenko compared the old name to a swear word and the acronym LGB.

In addition to its faculties and departments, the Belarusian State University of Foreign Languages also houses Confucius Institutes and a center for advanced training and retraining of personnel. The university continues to provide quality education in foreign languages, serving as a bridge between cultures and promoting global understanding.

For more specific information about the reasons behind the renaming, it is recommended to check official announcements from the Belarus Ministry of Education or the university itself.
