Board members of East Aurora's school face calls for inscription due to accusations of racially insensitive remarks.
In the District 131 School Board, President Juan Sifuentes Jr. acknowledges the challenging journey towards repairing the district, emphasizing its necessity. The district has been actively analysing historical trends and gathering community feedback to foster an equitable and respectful environment for every student and staff member.
Recent demands for the resignation of school committee member Mayra Reyes were expressed by members of the student and staff community between July and August 2023. However, during Monday night's meeting, Reyes did not indicate any intention of stepping down from her position.
The comments made by Reyes, which resurfaced in a recording from a closed meeting, were deemed insensitive and unfair to Black students, particularly regarding the district's dual language program. The apology for these comments was made by Reyes on Monday night at the District 131 School Board meeting.
Community leaders, including the DuPage County NAACP President Michael Childress and the Quad County Urban League President and CEO Theodia Gillespie, are calling for Reyes' resignation and "systemic changes" within the district. Gillespie stated that the apology from Reyes was too late, while Childress asserted that the demand for Reyes' resignation is a matter of right and heritage.
One speaker at the meeting called for ensuring that community representatives are not only representing one race. Sifuentes Jr. emphasized the importance of creating an environment where every student thrives and staff feel at home.
In response to concerns about an "unwelcome environment within the district," the district superintendent prioritizes improving the climate and culture. The superintendent plans to continue monthly discussions with community leaders to address concerns and ensure a supportive environment for all.
The comments made by Reyes during an interview for a school board position a year ago have sparked a significant controversy. The district superintendent acknowledges the importance of maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students and staff. The ongoing discussions aim to ensure that every student and staff member feels valued and respected within the District 131 School Board.
