Park University's Global Peace Journalism Center is jointly organizing the 2020 Greater Kansas City Peacebuilding Conference, comprising eight events spread across a three-month period.

Co-Hosted by Park University: Peacebuilding Conference in Kansas City Area

The Greater Kansas City Peacebuilding Conference 2020 is set to take place virtually over three months, starting on Wednesday, September 9th. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year's event will be held online, providing an opportunity for participants from all over the world to attend.

The conference, co-hosted by Park University and Johnson County Community College, is titled "Building Peace Through Social Justice." It will feature eight virtual presentations, each led by renowned speakers from various fields.

The first session, scheduled for September 9th at 2 p.m., will be led by Steve Youngblood, director of the Center for Global Peace Journalism at Park University. The topic of the session is "Partisan Media Narratives: Impeding Social Justice." Steve Youngblood will discuss how the media present partisan narratives about social justice issues, such as recent protest movements, and will also delve into how media can unite, instead of divide.

On Wednesday, October 7th, at 2 p.m., Tamanna Salikuddin, director of South Asia programs at the United States Institute of Peace, will lead a session titled "Social Justice in South Asia: A Tradition of Resistance and Current Challenges."

Rabbi Doug Alpert, of Congregation Kol Ami, Kansas City, Mo., will lead a session titled "Comprehensive and Effective Approach to Black Lives Matter and Addressing the Needs of All Marginalized Communities" on Wednesday, November 4th, 1 p.m.

Rev. Vernon Howard Jr., D.Min., president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City, will lead a session titled "The Pathology of American Racism: New Millennium Causes, Symptoms, Cures" on Thursday, November 5th, 11 a.m.

Quinton Lucas, mayor of Kansas City, Mo., will lead a session titled "Gun Violence" on Thursday, November 5th, 6 p.m.

Rev. Eric Garbison, director of Cherith Brook Catholic Worker House, Kansas City, Mo., will lead a session titled "Solidarity Not Charity: Building Peace Through Mutual Aid and Faith Activism" on Wednesday, November 4th, noon.

Melissa Robinson, president of the Black Health Care Coalition and member of the Kansas City, Mo., City Council, will lead a session titled "Economic Mobility: A Framework to Achieve Health Parity" on Thursday, November 5th, 12:30 p.m.

Lewis Diuguid, president of the Kansas City Association of Black Journalists, will lead a session titled "Disinformation, Civil Rights Protests and Social Justice" on Monday, September 21st, 1 p.m.
