Herford County Honours Caregivers with Week-Long Banner Display

In a show of support and recognition, a three-meter long banner will be displayed in front of the Herford County Hall from September 8, 2025, for a week. This action coincides with the national Day of Caregivers, an annual event held on September 8.

The initiative is spearheaded by Britta Holtmann, from the care planning department of Herford County. Holtmann, who previously worked in mobile care consultation, is acutely aware of the challenges faced by caregivers. Her contact details are phone (05221 13-1405) and email (b.holtmann@our website).

County Commissioner Jürgen Müller emphasizes the importance of recognizing the commitment of caregivers. "Caregivers play a vital role in our society, and it is essential that we acknowledge their dedication and hard work," Müller said.

Severe care-dependent people are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain support from professional care providers. Many caregivers are overwhelmed due to bureaucratic, social, physical, and psychological challenges. These challenges are compounded by the fact that over 80% of care-dependent people in Germany are cared for at home.

Herford County is a member of the state program "Compatibility of Work and Care", which offers several workshops and further training sessions throughout the year. The county administration also offers support to its own employees through care guides, who are contact persons for colleagues caring for relatives.

In addition to the banner display, contact points for relatives seeking help in Herford County include mobile care consultations (05221 13-18486 / 05221 13-18485), the city of Herford (05221 189 464), and care support points of the health insurance companies AWO, IKK, and BKK HMR. An online exchange for caregivers is organized quarterly by the equal opportunities department of the county.

Professional care and support staff are only available to a limited extent. As a result, many caregivers in Herford County are often juggling work, family, and their own challenges in addition to caring for a relative at home.

The banner is intended to draw attention to the efforts of caregivers and serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting them. The county administration recognizes the significance of this support, as over 80% of care-dependent people in Germany are cared for at home. By acknowledging and appreciating the efforts of caregivers, Herford County hopes to inspire others to do the same.
