Harvard Escapes Trump's University Ban for Now: What's the Lowdown?

Court issues injunction halting Trump's attempts to interfere with Harvard's admission policies

In a win for Harvard University, a federal court in the USA temporarily thwarted President Trump's announced ban on nearly all foreign students from studying at the prestigious institution. The court's ruling allows the status quo—as it was before Trump's announcement—to remain in place until a hearing. Here's what you need to know about this ongoing conflict.

The trampling of elite education? Not so fast!

Harvard University, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was claimed to be under fire by the Trump administration, which sought to outlaw foreign students from entering the USA to study at the esteemed university. Judge Allison D. Burroughs, however, recently ruled that the university had sufficiently demonstrated that it would experience "immediate and irreparable harm" if the court did not intervene. As a result, the planned project has been stopped temporarily, and the previously enforced rules will remain in effect.

The university's lawyers argued that the government's ban dropped like a sledgehammer on Harvard, potentially causing significant and un repairable damage. Going forward, the issue is far from settled, as the eventual outcome of the court case remains uncertain.

International report: USA vs. Higher Education?

Harvard recently added an amendment to an existing lawsuit, challenging Trump's announcement. The government alleges that several universities, including Harvard, have a left-leaning bias, and that insufficient measures have been taken to combat anti-Semitism. Unlike other universities, Harvard is standing up against political directives from Washington, instead choosing the legal route to address the administration's actions.

Politics rears its head at Harvard

Trump proclaimed that the entry restrictions would initially apply for six months, arguing that Harvard is an "inappropriate" target for foreign students and researchers. Trump's administration had been feuding with Harvard for months over several issues.

Harvard's response: The university refuted the Trump administration's assertion, stating that the entry of foreign nationals was not detrimental to the interests of the USA, especially since they could still enter the country, provided they didn't want to study at Harvard. The Trump administration's announcement, therefore, merely serves to reinforce a contested plan already being challenged in court, according to Harvard's revised complaint.

The fight against foreign student exclusion

For several weeks, Harvard has been protesting the US government's proposed exclusion of foreign students. In May, Judge Burroughs issued a ruling that blocked this project, and she recently extended this decision. Currently, the government is prohibited from stopping Harvard from continuing to accept foreign students through a special federal program.
