Park University has been bustling with activity in July, with a host of new developments and recognitions. Here's a round-up of some of the key events and achievements that have taken place over the past few weeks.
New additions to Park University's Board of Trustees were announced, with Mitzi Cardenas, Mara Cohara, and Sarah Moe Meyers joining the esteemed group. Jeanette Prenger was re-elected as the chair of the Board for the 2019-20 year.
In the realm of academics, Alex Hoehn, a sophomore majoring in business administration/management, made headlines when he was featured in the Shawnee Mission (Kan.) Post for his impressive achievement of winning the U23 Road Race National Championships in cycling. Meanwhile, John Hamilton, Ph.D., associate professor of criminal justice administration, was interviewed for a story aired on KSHB-TV in Kansas City, discussing the search in Braymer, Mo., for two missing brothers from Wisconsin.
Park University's online Bachelor of Science degree in information and computer science/software development was ranked No. 10 on The BestSchools.org's "Best Online Bachelor's in Software Engineering Degree Programs" list. Brent Short was appointed as director of library services, and Dana Frasca was named director of network academic success.
The University also made strides in recognising the achievements of its alumni. Mary Billingsley-Jones, '02, was featured as the Veteran of the Day on July 17 by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in its blog, VAntage Point. Bob Kendrick, '85, the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, was the focus of a commentary piece in The Kansas City Star on July 13.
Park University is offering a tuition waiver for one class (up to three credit hours) for active duty U.S. service members, guard, or reservists enrolled for the Fall semester or Fall I term. On the research front, Park University's Valor Medals Review effort was featured on KCTV in Kansas City on July 29, with interviews from Tim Westcott, Ph.D., Ashlyn Weber, senior public history major, and Josh Weston, sophomore European/classical history major. The University was also featured in EdScoop on July 17, discussing the University's use of Amazon Alexa and its impact on student engagement and productivity.
The University's Parkville Campus welcomed a visit from Missouri Governor Mike Parson on July 25. Upcoming events at Park University include commencement ceremonies, blood drives, faculty conferences, move-in day, the start of the fall semester, opening convocation, a Kansas City area students/faculty/staff picnic, a lecture by Stephen Walt, Fort Irwin (Calif.) Campus commencement, International Talk Like a Pirate Day, Homecoming and Family Weekend, an International Center for Music Concert, Park House Celebration, and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (Ariz.) Campus commencement.
Lastly, Laurel DeFreece's mixed media works inspired by nature and the prairie will be on display at the Park University 2019-20 Campanella Gallery exhibition. Casi Joy McCall, '12, a modern-day musician, appeared in an hour-long podcast produced by WDAF-TV in Kansas City on July 30. Isaac Barber was appointed as director of residence life.
