In the heart of Schildgen, a small town nestled in the Archdiocese of Cologne, a unique joint counseling office has been operating for two decades. This office, a beacon of support for many, is backed by volunteer employees of Caritas and Diakonie.

The Schildgen counseling office is renowned for its ecumenical connection, linking the Catholic Herz-Jesu parish and the Evangelical Andreaskirche in a bond of shared service. The office's primary focus is on helping families navigate their concerns, offering a supportive ear and practical solutions when needed.

Beyond the borders of Schildgen, the office's reach extends to four ongoing projects in the current quarter. One project remains local, supporting the town itself, while three others are international, aiding communities in Rhein-Berg, Cameroon, and South Sudan.

In Germany, Sabine Schiek assists German teacher and beekeeper Josue Damatal at the Verein Horizontes. Their efforts extend to projects in the Nubabergen/South Sudan region. Meanwhile, Father Stephan, a 91-year-old Cistercian monk, shares his decades-long commitment in South Sudan and the initiatives he founded, including projects in the Nuba Mountains.

The beekeeping project in Cameroon, supported by Horizontes, offers a source of income for disadvantaged mothers. By training women to become beekeepers, the project has increased the independence of the participants, improved honey yields, and financed school attendance for children.

Father Stephan's initiatives in South Sudan have also made a significant impact. He conducts lively and joyful services for over 1000 children and youth, providing them with much-needed support and joy.

The Schildgen counseling office also extends a helping hand to seniors overwhelmed by unexpected additional payments, such as electricity bills. They provide shopping vouchers for a local bakery or discount supermarket, offering a much-needed lifeline in difficult times.

During summer holidays, the office also offers vouchers for leisure activities such as swimming pools, mini-golf, ice cream parlours, and discount supermarket food, bringing a smile to many faces.

The office's international projects are funded through benefit actions, tips from café guests, and collected donations. Representatives of the Catholic Youth Agency (kja) and the One World association "Horizontes" each received symbolic donation checks of 2,950 euros for their respective projects.

The H&A team also ensures that the Schildgen community is kept informed, sending a local news overview every morning at 7:07 AM.

Father Stephan, with over 50 books under his belt, has shared moving passages from his works during his reports, inspiring many with his dedication and wisdom. He has been traveling to South Sudan for several weeks each year since the 1990s, a testament to his unwavering commitment.

Reinhold Glüsenkamp and Sabine Schiek from the Horizontes association support Josue Damatal, a German teacher and beekeeper, in his beekeeping project in Cameroon. Their combined efforts are making a tangible difference in the lives of many.

The Schildgen counseling office is financed exclusively by donations from Schildgen residents, a testament to the community's support and belief in its mission. As the office continues to grow and evolve, it remains a shining example of community spirit and care.
