The Emmy Award-winning documentary "That Creative Spark" offers a captivating glimpse into a 2024 Independent Activities Period (IAP) bladesmithing class at MIT. Produced by MIT Open Learning's video team, the film showcases students learning the art and science of making hand-forged knives, from grinding and forging to tempering steel blocks into sharp blades.

Directed and produced by Joe McMaster, the documentary captures the immersive experience of students forging knives under the guidance of master bladesmith Bob Kramer. The film is celebrated for its portrayal of the blend of artistry and metallurgy in the bladesmithing process, as well as the collaborative effort of the MIT video production team, which includes Clayton Hainsworth as executive producer and Wesley Richardson as cinematographer.

The documentary highlights the physical and hands-on nature of the craft, illustrating MIT’s motto of "mens et manus" (mind and hand) by combining metallurgy and creative skill. The students' efforts are rewarded with knives sharp enough to slice through a sheet of paper without resistance.

The documentary won an Emmy Award in the Education/Schools category at the 48th Boston/New England Emmy Awards held in June 2025. The team behind "That Creative Spark" was also honoured by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Boston/New England Chapter.

This project exemplifies MIT's culture of learning through practical, hands-on activities integrated with scientific theory. The Emmy recognition reflects the quality and educational impact of the documentary. The bladesmithing classes, epitomizing the MIT motto of 'mens et manus', offer a unique opportunity for students to learn a traditional craft while also gaining a deep understanding of the scientific principles involved.
