Edo State in Nigeria partners with Google to provide digital literacy education to 800 students
In a significant step towards preparing its youth for the global digital workforce, the Edo State Government, in partnership with Google, has launched the Advanced Job Ready Tech Programme. This initiative aims to equip 800 Edo students with advanced digital skills [2][4][5].
The programme, which aligns with the government's SHINE Agenda, is designed to prepare participants for new digital job opportunities worth an estimated 37 million jobs globally [2]. The training covers areas such as data science, visualization, geospatial data, computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning.
To ensure inclusivity, a fully equipped Digital Hub in Benin has been provided for students without laptops. Remote learning options are also available for those who prefer it. Participants will have access to career fairs, internships, and remote job opportunities that can pay in foreign currency [1].
In addition to the student-focused programme, Edo State is also implementing a virtual training for over 6,000 teachers on digital skills in collaboration with SkillUp Naija. This training covers modules such as coding, AI, web development, video editing, and social media management, aiming to appoint certified teachers as SkillUp Edo ambassadors in schools to support skills integration in education [1].
The Advanced Job Ready Tech Programme is part of Governor Monday Okpebholo's broader effort to empower youth and educators with critical digital competencies for participation in the modern economy and global digital job market [1][2][4][5]. The programme remains open to Edo students, both home and abroad. No changes have been made to the SHINE Agenda or the governance of the programme.
