Eight student dormitories to be inaugurated in Astana this year
New Student Dormitories and Schools Coming to Astana for the Upcoming Academic Year
Astana is gearing up for the new academic year with the commissioning of new student dormitories and schools. Last year, five student dormitories with a total capacity of almost 1,700 places were commissioned in the capital, and more are on the way.
Akim Kasymbek and relevant authorities, including universities and investors, are working on increasing the number of dormitory places. By the end of 2025, another 7 student dormitories with 2,060 places will be commissioned. One specific new student dormitory, with a capacity of 354 places, is expected to open at the Eurasian National University for the 2025-2026 academic year.
However, in the first half of 2025, Astana saw the construction of four new dormitories, but it is unclear if these were fully completed dormitories intended specifically for students or mixed-use facilities. Nationwide trends show some growth in dormitory commissions in 2025 versus prior years, but the student-specific dormitory increases remain limited and unevenly distributed.
In addition to the dormitories, 15 schools will open in the capital, creating 28,000 student places (in two shifts). Seven of these schools are part of the national project "Comfortable School". The 400-bed student dormitory located at Pushkin St., 13a is being prepared for opening before the new academic year. This dormitory was built with private investments.
Akim of Astana, Jenis Kasymbek, shared an update on student dormitories via his Instagram page. Akim Kasymbek visited the 400-bed student dormitory with Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek. Unfortunately, no information has been provided about the visits or updates from Akim Kasymbek or any relevant authorities regarding these new facilities.
The number of out-of-town students increases annually, suggesting that demand for student housing will likely keep increasing through 2026 and beyond. Despite the challenges, the city is making significant strides in addressing the student housing shortage, as evidenced by the ongoing construction and commissioning of new dormitories and schools.
Education and self-development are essential focuses as Astana continues to construct new student dormitories and schools, aiming to accommodate more students for the upcoming academic year and beyond. The commissioning of additional dormitories, such as the 400-bed one at Pushkin St., 13a, is expected to contribute significantly to the education-and-self-development sector, providing a conducive environment for students.
