Crank Up That Motivation: Schoolchildren's New Movement Push in North Rhine-Westphalia 🏃♂️🏀🎉
Expansion of skills beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic: Advancement of skill-based initiative - Encouraging More Than Just Reading and Arithmetic: latest incentives for enhanced personal mobility
It's not all about books and numbers anymore! The Startchancen program, launched last year by the feds and state governments, is gaining ground in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Now, they're pumping up the "movement" bit, stating that sports, games, and physical activities help boost social skills, interaction, and yep, you guessed it, learning inspiration. And who wouldn't want that, right? More tools for our schools to skyrocket educational success!
The school movement isn't one-size-fits-all. The Ministry of Education reveals several flavors—from promoting self-regulation, self-assertion, and resilience to supporting measures that lock students into sports clubs and make going there a breeze. Fashionable stuff like secure swimming, street ball, and skating also snag a spot.
Got a sporty goal? How about participating in a tournament, fun run, or skating event? Yup, those are in too! Sick of your wheels at home? Public skate and pump track facilities or street hoops might be eligible for funding. The idea here is to sprinkle some movement magic into everyday school life, with no boring fist-bumps.
Bored school teachers? Not in NRW! Interested schools can find their friendly neighborhood contacts on the website of the state sports association (LSB). Once you secure a provider with the help of the local or district sports association, you can shoot for some funds through LSB's funding portal. Applications even open mid-pond season. No excuses, eh?
NRW wants more, much more!Startchancen is a joint effort between the feds and NRW, and aims to lend a hand to over 4,000 schools in socially challenging areas nationwide. Locally, around 900 schools with a high percentage of socio-economically disadvantaged students reap the benefits, as the Ministry notes.
Minister of Education Dorothee Feller (CDU) gives us the lowdown: "Our primary goal for the Startchancen program is to strengthen basic competencies in reading, writing, and math. But don't forget, we're casting even broader nets in North Rhine-Westphalia." For the "movement" component, she allocates up to 2.5 million euros per school year to the state sports association.

Here's the lowdown on why movement and sports matter in education...
Movement and sports provide extra bang for your buck with physical health, cognitive abilities, and social skills. These benefits also translate into learning motivation through increased engagement, emotional well-being, cognitive benefits, and social learning.
Games, both physical and educational, take learning motivation to the next level by gamification, interactivity, and social interaction. And pairing all that with sports, they're a match made in heaven!
In the education-and-self-development landscape of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Community policy aims to infuse movement and sports into schools, encouraging both physical activities and vocational training programs such as street ball, skating, and secure swimming. The Ministry of Education promotes these avenues as valuable tools for enhancing social skills, learning inspiration, and cognitive abilities, thereby fostering a holistic approach to education.
