Encouraging Understanding for Kids of Substance-Dependent Guardians
Shining a Light on Kids Impacted by Parental Addiction: The Neuwied Approach
Movie Night at Big House Neuwied Ignites Conversation Among Professionals
When a parent battles substance abuse, it leaves a lasting impact on their kids. Many of these children carry the burden of these experiences, rarely discussing them due to the culture of silence within affected families. Desiring to put a stop to this silence, Laura Rockenfeller from the county youth office and Franziska Klein from the city youth office invited over 80 professionals to a movie night at the Big House youth center.
- COA week: Bringing Attention to Kids in Families Affected by Addiction
According to recent studies, over 2.6 million children and young people in Germany endure family lives with one or more parent dealing with addiction. In Neuwied county and city, that amounts to around 6,800 children. The COA week aims to bring attention to the plight of these children worldwide, helping to break the silence and give a voice to them. These kids often live through stigma and exclusion within their families, but they are not responsible for their parents' addiction. Consequently, they suffer the consequences.
Neuwied's Response: A Movie Night
Alongside other partners, the youth offices in Neuwied strive to give these children a voice. To do so, they require professionals sensitive to the hardships faced by these kids. The movie night, featuring the film "ZOEY," brought this crucial topic to the forefront and provided training for professionals from kindergartens and schools on how to address such situations. The story of a 14-year-old girl battling her father's alcohol relapse serves as a reminder for children who often take on adult responsibilities and suffer from neglect and stigma. Post-film, educators shared their thoughts, and employees from the Caritas association Neuwied presented their programs "Chewey & Groot" and "Verruckt na und," both designed to offer support and vital contact points for Neuwied's children and youth from psychologically or addictingly affected families.
