In the heart of Germany, the city of Oberhausen has been navigating the challenging times of the Coronavirus pandemic with characteristic straightforwardness and pragmatism. As we approach the New Year, there are reasons to be optimistic about the future.
Sonja Bongers, the fraction leader in Oberhausen, has highlighted several positive indicators that suggest the pandemic could be controlled or even brought to an end in 2022. The SPD in local politics has founded a city development company to give Oberhausen influence in shaping its future. This company aims to address issues that cannot be solved locally alone, even with the greatest joint effort.
The pandemic has also led to insights about school learning that will be applied to existing schools. A new comprehensive school will be built in the east of Oberhausen with the best conditions for equipping children for a complex, ever-changing world.
However, the tough months of the pandemic have taken a toll on many in the community. Self-employed individuals, gastronomers, and parents are among those who have lost optimism. To address this, a comprehensive senior support plan will be developed based on a social democratic discussion paper.
The people of Oberhausen are facing the challenges of the pandemic with common sense, pragmatism, and mutual consideration. This spirit is reflected in the motto "Act, not talk," which is reflective of Oberhausen's hardworking nature and is applicable to the challenges ahead.
The new federal government under SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz has made the fight against the pandemic a top priority. The government has provided tools to address the pandemic situation, and many thanks go to doctors, medical staff, helpers, organisers of vaccination campaigns, and soldiers of the Bundeswehr for their efforts against the pandemic.
