Enhanced math scores observed in Abitur exams to some extent - Enhanced math skills demonstrated in certain outcomes
In a recent announcement, Simone Oldenburg, the Minister of Education in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, revealed that the written mathematics Abitur results have shown a remarkable improvement this year. The Minister belongs to the Left Party.
The significant improvement was primarily due to a restructuring of the exam tasks, which made the test more accessible and better aligned with students' abilities. This task restructuring played a crucial role by adapting the problems to reduce complexity and focus more on core competencies, thereby improving overall student performance.
As a result, all students who took the math Abitur in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern received an extra point to compensate for previously poor results, indicating recognition of prior difficulties that were alleviated by the new task format [1]. The restructuring likely involved simplifying or better framing the exam tasks to prevent unnecessary cognitive overload and to align better with what was taught and practiced in schools.
The improvements were particularly noticeable in the basic course with a computer algebra system (CAS), where the score increased from 6.6 to 6.8 points this year. In the basic course with a scientific calculator (WTR), the improvement is approximately a full grade compared to last year, with the average score now at 7.2 points, equivalent to a grade of 3.
However, there were slight declines in scores in the advanced courses of mathematics Abitur. The score in the CAS course dropped from 8.7 to 8.2 points, while the WTR course saw a decline from 8.6 to 8.1 points. No reasons were given for these declines.
The minister also noted that efforts were made to formulate tasks more clearly. Previously, all tasks in the written mathematics Abitur had to be solved in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This year, for the first time in the region, there were choice tasks, similar to other federal states.
The improvements and declines were announced for the written mathematics Abitur results specifically and were not specified for any other subject or region. The improvements align with broader educational insights that structured learning outcomes and carefully designed tasks have a positive impact on mathematics achievement, as seen in other educational research emphasizing task design around student capabilities [3].
