Extended Bike Path: Schorndorf Bridges Cycling Infrastructure Gap

In the picturesque town of Schorndorf, a significant improvement has been made to the bicycle routes at the Grauhalde Campus. The changes aim to create a safer and more enjoyable cycling experience for all, particularly benefiting children and young people on their way to school.

The city has widened the bike lanes on Schlichtener Straße and at the entrance to Krummhaarstraße, ensuring they comply with current regulations at 1.85 meters. This additional space provides cyclists with the opportunity to maintain a safe distance from moving traffic, contributing to traffic calming, especially at the zebra crossing in Krummhaarstraße.

The improvements also include the creation of advanced stop lines and waiting areas for cyclists, which have been enhanced to increase visibility in the streetscape. These areas, measuring 1.85 meters or two meters in width, offer cyclists a separate, clearly marked space before intersections, promoting a more relaxed and safe cycling experience.

The headmistress of Max-Planck-Gymnasium, Carmen Nasse, expressed her delight with the new regulations, stating, "The new markings are great!" Hundreds of students who use this route daily to get to the Grauhalde campus share her sentiment, as the changes have been made in time for the start of the new school year.

According to mobility experts in the Schorndorf town hall, these changes were necessary to fill a significant gap in the bike lane network. The new bike lane markings and improvements also aim to further reduce conflict situations and protect children and young people on their way to school.

Moreover, the intersection area of Schlichtener and Krummhaarstraße now features red markings to draw attention to bike traffic, enhancing the overall structure of the streetscape. The new bike lane markings and improvements are expected to benefit all cyclists, promoting a more enjoyable and safer cycling experience.

It is important to note that these changes pertain solely to the Grauhalde campus in Schorndorf and do not involve any other location or entity. The city of Schorndorf continues to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of its residents, particularly its young students, by investing in the improvement of its infrastructure.
