Father and son engaging in educational activities together at home
Carpentry Class: A Father-Son Duo's Unconventional Semester
Father and son, Sigurður Brynjar Pálsson and Sölvi Steinn Sigurðsson, are unconventionally learning to craft wooden masterpieces at the evening school run by FB. This father-son team has big plans—they're aiming to work together to build a charming guesthouse for their family's summerhouse next summer.

Sigurður, the CEO of BYKO, is no stranger to the world of construction. He recalls working as a contractor's hand during his high school years, but his life took a different turn. Fast forward to today, he's back in the shop—but this time, for a more creative reason. "I've always been drawn to using my hands and creating something tangible. I realized that I could put this passion into action while also ensuring that I can tackle home maintenance at our summerhouse," says Sigurður.

Sölvi, a 21-year-old entrepreneur in the making, is pursuing a business degree at the University of Iceland. Sharing his father's love for hands-on work, he initially hesitated when the carpentry opportunity presented itself. However, he ultimately decided to dive in, viewing it as a unique opportunity to bond with his father.
"I wasn't planning to become a carpenter, but I saw it as a great opportunity to spend time with my dad while challenging myself in a new way. Plus, education is always valuable," Sölvi added.
TheDualDetermined
The duo confesses they're enjoying the hands-on experience. They recognize the occasional challenges, such as adapting to three-dimensional thinking and grasping real-world dimensions during basic drawing courses. Despite the occasional stress of fitting school and coursework into their busy schedules, they both agree that it's a rewarding experience.
"Working in carpentry alongside my studies has been an excellent fit. It's a nice break from textbooks and a chance to immerse myself in a more physical activity. Balancing my time has been key, but it's all been worth it," says Sölvi.
Quality Family Time
While collaborating on carpentry projects, the father-son duo revels in their unique dynamic. "Studying with Sölvi has been a special and enjoyable experience. We always have tremendous fun, and I've had the chance to see a different side of him as a co-student and friend. Often, it's been me seeking his opinion and advice, and we've worked together to scrutinize our assignments and arrive at a mutually agreed-upon conclusion," Sigurður shares.
"Studying with my dad has been a memorable experience. We joke around a lot, and I've learned so much just by observing him. It's also an opportunity for us to build a stronger bond, which I truly appreciate," Sölvi adds.
TheValue of Learning
Sigurður emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning, offering praise for the multifaceted benefits that a carpentry education has afforded him. "Working on carpentry projects has been both enjoyable and challenging. The experience has expanded my understanding of construction, providing me with insights that will directly contribute to my role as the CEO of BYKO. Moreover, I'll be able to tackle home maintenance and undertake personal projects with greater competence," says Sigurður.
Sölvi, still making his way through university, sees potential value in his carpentry studies as well. "I'm confident that the carpentry skills I've acquired will serve me well in both my professional and personal life. Carpentry isn't my career path at the moment, but I never know what the future holds. Perhaps this carpentry journey will lead to something exciting in the years to come," says Sölvi with a smile.
