FedEx SMART Centre Launches at IIT Madras: A Comprehensive Initiative in Sustainable Logistics
On August 19, 2025, the FedEx SMART Centre was officially unveiled at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M). This Supply Chain Modelling, Algorithms, Research and Technology Centre is a joint venture between IIT-M and Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), aimed at developing sustainable, technology-driven logistics solutions.
The centre boasts a multidisciplinary team of 50 researchers and 20 faculty members, working across various domains such as carbon-neutral operations, autonomous delivery systems, electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, predictive analytics, and AI-driven worker safety.
The FedEx SMART Centre is backed by a $5 million grant from FedEx and combines academic research with industry expertise. It serves as a hub for collaboration, capacity development, and knowledge sharing. The centre aims to drive Pan-India impact through talent outreach, internships, and research projects.
Kami Viswanathan, President of FedEx's Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa (MEISA), described the FedEx SMART Centre as a space where technology and talent come together to shape the future. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, stated that the collaboration between IIT Madras and FedEx will address human resources and related infrastructure issues.
The FedEx SMART Centre is more than just a research hub; it has a shared purpose to make meaningful impact for all stakeholders. The centre's initiatives include integrating new technologies such as UAVs and EVs to promote sustainable and efficient logistics. It is positioned to address both technology challenges and human factors in logistics, aiming to build smarter, more sustainable supply chains that balance agility and environmental responsibility.
