Financial aid for artists' education and development
Fedele Maura Friede, a young artist hailing from Holzminden, has recently moved to the city of Viersen to begin her residency, supported by the Peters-Messer Scholarship. This scholarship, a joint initiative between the Peters-Messer family and the city of Viersen, aims to support young artists at the beginning of their careers.
Born in 1997, Fedele completed her bachelor's degree in cultural studies at the University of Leipzig from 2020 to 2024. She further honed her skills in art, graduating with distinction in painting and graphics from the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig in 2018. In 2024, she was awarded the 8th Horst-Janssen-Graphics Prize of the Claus-Hüppe Foundation and was given a solo exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
Fedele's work explores the conditions of perception of space, time, and body. During her stay in Viersen, she wants to delve deeper into the concept of the edge, finding inspiration in the wide Niederrhein landscape. Her art uses various forms of expression that combine painting and graphics, installation, and text in a dialogue.
The apartment where Fedele will be residing has been renovated and converted for this purpose. The establishment of the Peters-Messer Scholarship will allow Viersen to permanently benefit from networking within the 'Borderland Residencies'. The scholarship is focused on artists whose main work is on paper, such as print graphics, drawing, or photography.
Mayor Sabine Anemüller welcomed Fedele to Viersen, expressing her excitement for the artist's residency. The city looks forward to the unique perspectives and creations that Fedele will bring during her time here.
Florian Peters-Messer, representing the Peters-Messer family, played a significant role in the scholarship's establishment. The Peters-Messer Scholarship of the City of Viersen was officially established on July 3rd, 2024, through a contract between the Peters-Messer family and the city. The artist currently supported by the scholarship is Fedele Maura Friede, and she began this residency on August 1st, 2023.
The city of Viersen is thrilled to have Fedele Maura Friede as its resident artist. Her stay promises to be an enriching experience for both the city and the artist, as she delves deeper into her exploration of the edge and the relationship between space, time, and body.
