Forest Regeneration Promoted for Sustainable Ecosystems and Timber Usage

In Italy, a significant shift has been observed in the forestry sector, with a decrease in the area dedicated to planting from over 192 hectares in 2022 to around 154 hectares in 2023. Despite this decline, the role of poplar cultivation remains crucial in the context of reforestation and wood culture development, aiming to increase wood consumption in Italy.

Last year, 2,403,866 trees were planted across the country, with the Veneto region and the Po Delta area emerging as the key regions with the most notable tree planting projects. The Veneto region has been the focal point of initiatives like the “We Love Nature” project, which has spearheaded extensive tree planting activities. Meanwhile, the Po Delta area has emerged as a significant site for environmental projects related to carbon absorption through ecosystem management in fishing valleys, contributing to CO2 fixation.

These tree planting and environmental projects in Italy offer numerous benefits. They encourage local employment by engaging personnel for project implementation and maintenance. Moreover, they lead to cost savings in agricultural contexts, such as vineyards, due to reduced fuel consumption and overall management needs, thanks to green infrastructure like hedgerows and tree rows. Additionally, these projects support local industries by providing timber and non-timber products, although this is more documented in ecological forestry practices abroad.

Environmentally, these projects contribute to carbon sequestration, improved soil health and biodiversity, reduced soil erosion, and protection against environmental stressors. In areas like the Po Delta, maintaining aquatic ecosystems supports better carbon fixation while protecting biodiversity.

In 2023, Italy saw 291 major projects of new urban and extra-urban plantations across the national territory, covering a total of 3,089 hectares of public and private land. Among metropolitan cities, Bari, Messina, and Turin are the top positions in forestation interventions.

The partnership between Legambiente and Conlegno has produced an additional activity with the Segherie Urbane project, which aims to valorize wooden products within the circular economy and urban recovery of wooden products. Moreover, Conlegno promotes a systemic and circular vision of the wood industry in Italy, including increasing the Italian wood harvesting rate, improving technological innovation, maximizing recovery, reuse, and recycling, and developing automation and digitalization.

Afforestation, particularly in cities, is one of the most effective solutions to combat climate change in Italy, given the country's high hydrogeological risk and exposure to climate change, causing violent weather phenomena. However, it's worth noting that in 2023, no new plantations funded with regional funds were reported in seven regions: Abruzzo, Campania, Lazio, Lombardy, Tuscany, Calabria, and Molise.

As the forestry sector evolves, both Conlegno and Legambiente are strengthening their collaboration, with Conlegno becoming a partner of the Forum Forests, a Legambiente campaign focused on forest ecosystems. Furthermore, the study suggests opening a reflection on the potential use of non-invasive exotic species in forestation interventions.

Looking ahead, the 8th edition of "The Bioeconomy of Forests" national forum will take place in Rome on October 29, 2025, and the first edition of Forests on Tour will kick off this fall. These events aim to foster discussions and collaborations among stakeholders to further advance Italy's forestry sector and combat climate change effectively.

  1. The sciences of climate-change and environmental-science are essential in guiding Italy's forestry sector, as demonstrated by the decreasing plantation areas and the continued importance of poplar cultivation.
  2. Last year, an impressive number of 2,403,866 trees were planted nationwide, with the Veneto region's "We Love Nature" project and Po Delta Park standing out for their significant tree planting activities.
  3. The roles of Legambiente and Conlegno are crucial in advancing Italy's forestry sector, as they collaborate on various projects, including the Segherie Urbane initiative, aimed at promoting a circular economy for wooden products.
  4. Technological innovation plays a vital role in forestry, as Conlegno advocates for improving automation and digitalization to increase the Italian wood harvesting rate and foster a more systemic and circular wood industry.
  5. In addition to carbon sequestration, the benefits of these forestry projects extend to cost savings in agriculture, improved soil health, biodiversity, reduced soil erosion, protection against environmental stressors, and supporting local industries through timber and non-timber products.
  6. Afforestation, particularly in urban areas, is a key strategy in Italy's climate-change combat, but it's concerning that seven regions reported no new plantations funded with regional funds in 2023.
  7. To further advance Italy's forestry sector, considerations should be given to the potential use of non-invasive exotic species in forestation interventions, and the 8th edition of "The Bioeconomy of Forests" national forum in Rome on October 29, 2025, aims to facilitate such discussions.
  8. Personal growth and career development in forestry can be achieved through learning (education-and-self-development) about forest ecosystems, skills-training, and staying informed on the latest strategies for combating climate-change, like investing in home-and-garden projects that promote green infrastructure.
  9. In the realm of sports, sports-betting enthusiasts might find an interesting opportunity in wagering on the success and expansion of Italy's forestry practices, given the growing significance of environmental conservation and the potential for profitable returns through investments in data-and-cloud-computing-driven projects that support these initiatives.
