Funds amounting to approximately EUR 3.9 million are being allocated to Fraunhofer Institutes by the Government.
The Fraunhofer Society, a leading research organisation with a broad spectrum of expertise, has been awarded funding for eight innovative transfer projects in the state of Baden-Württemberg. This funding, totalling around 3.9 million euros, will be provided by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg from 2025 to 2028.
Established in 1949, the Fraunhofer Society operates 76 institutes and research facilities across Germany, with a significant presence in Baden-Württemberg, where 13 institutes are based. The society's research portfolio encompasses a wide range of technology fields, including energy research, production research, materials research, security, mobility, learning systems and artificial intelligence, quantum sensorics, and bioeconomy and environmental technologies.
The selected projects cover a diverse array of topics, such as hydrogen technologies, AI-supported material data analysis, and the digitization of the construction industry. The aim of these projects is to develop new solutions together with companies, test them in practice, and establish them sustainably.
Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg, has been instrumental in the establishment and development of the Fraunhofer Society's institutions in the state. She stated that the goal is for excellent research to lead to tangible progress for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The Fraunhofer Society's institutes in Baden-Württemberg have a total budget, including investments, of around 600 million euros. The society employs around 32,000 staff members, predominantly with backgrounds in natural or engineering sciences.
The further expansion of applied research and the foundation and settlement of new institutes are among the strategic goals of the state government in innovation policy. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism supports this expansion and development through investments in buildings and equipment.
The Ministry also has special funds available for the promotion of collaborations between the institutes of the Fraunhofer Society and SMEs through the Double Budget 2025/2026. This funding is aimed at strengthening the transfer of knowledge and technology from research to SMEs in the state and future-proofing the Innovation Hub of Baden-Württemberg.
The industry-related institutes of the Fraunhofer Society have been a central factor in innovation in Baden-Württemberg for decades, particularly for SMEs. SMEs need excellent partners from research, especially during times of technological change, and the Fraunhofer Society's projects demonstrate the capabilities of research institutions in transferring knowledge to the economy.
The regions of Stuttgart, Freiburg, and Karlsruhe form local focal points for the Fraunhofer institutes in Baden-Württemberg. The Fraunhofer Society covers all important technology fields, including energy research, production research, materials research, security, mobility, learning systems and artificial intelligence, quantum sensorics, and bioeconomy and environmental technologies.
In conclusion, the funding of these eight innovative transfer projects by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg is a significant step towards strengthening the collaboration between research institutions and SMEs, and towards ensuring the future-proofing of the Innovation Hub of Baden-Württemberg.
