Germany Welcomes Record Indian Students, Now Largest Foreign Group
Germany is witnessing a surge in Indian students, with nearly 60,000 currently enrolled. This marks a 20% increase from the previous year, making Indians the largest group of foreign students in Germany. The trend is driven by Germany's cost-effective, high-quality education, STEM strength, and supportive immigration policies.
The growth in Indian students is remarkable. In just five years, their numbers have more than doubled, from around 20,800 in 2018-19 to nearly 50,000 in 2023-24. Engineering remains the top choice, accounting for 60% of Indian student enrolments. Factors contributing to this boom include stricter US immigration policies, Germany's introduction of the 'Chance Card' visa, and growing cooperation with Indian institutions.
New immigration frameworks allow Indian students to work up to 20 hours per week and ease their transition to permanent roles. Initiatives like DAAD scholarships, English-taught programs, and the India-Germany Mobility Partnership have also facilitated this growth. As of the winter semester 2023-24, around 49,483 Indian students were enrolled, with a 15% year-on-year increase.
Germany's appeal to Indian students continues to grow, with their numbers reaching nearly 60,000. Engineering remains the most popular field of study. With supportive immigration policies and streamlined visa processes, Germany is set to welcome even more Indian students in the coming years.
