Gloria: An Individual's Identity Revealed
In the heart of an elementary school, the afternoon session is underway. A timid knock echoes through the office, interrupting Gloria's lunchtime review of the Pupil Assessments. The assessments, she finds, are disappointing.
Gloria's desk, a sanctuary of order amidst the chaos of the school day, is adorned with a half-empty coffee mug and biscuit crumbs. Her newly sharpened pencils, neatly arranged in a pot, stand in stark contrast to the disarray outside.
The office door swings open, revealing Grace Bennett, a four-year-old child, clutching a crumpled sheet of paper. Instead of offering it to Gloria, she points towards Steve Honey's desk. Steve, a teacher known for his unruly football games outside the office and his irritating screensaver featuring him in a Hawaiian shirt and surrounded by 'kids', is nowhere to be seen.
Gloria, ever mindful of her policy about the state of someone's pencils, can't help but notice the disarray on Steve's desk. One of his notes, proudly declaring him as "To the Best Teacher in the World", hangs on his corkboard, surrounded by pictures and notes given to him by his pupils.
Gloria, who doesn't understand the term 'control freak' being used derogatorily, imagines Steve's exaggerated Geordie accent as she promises to give the picture to him after screwing the paper into a ball and throwing it at the waste paper bin.
As she turns back to her assessments, something thuds against the office window. The day in Gloria's classroom is far from over.
Despite the challenges, Gloria remains steadfast in her beliefs. She introduced a dress code at work, knowing it would make her unpopular, and she stands firm on the importance of organisation and professionalism. She believes there's more to a teacher's job than just exam results, a belief echoed by Steve's statement.
