Jobless rate increases in August

In August 2025, the Dutch labour market experienced a mixed bag of developments, according to the Arbeitsmarktbericht August 2025. The unemployment rate among people aged 25 to 44 saw a rise since December 2024, reaching 3.3% in August. Conversely, the unemployment rate among those aged 45 and over remained steady at 2.5%.

The unemployment figures for this age group have been relatively stable, with the rate last dropping to 2.5% in December 2022. The unemployment rate among the younger demographic, those aged 15 to 24, fluctuated slightly more in the past few months, settling at 8.6% in August.

The Employee Insurance Agency (UWV) reported a total of 187.4 thousand current unemployment benefits in August, a decrease of 22.1 thousand from the previous month, as 22.1 thousand unemployment benefits were terminated. Simultaneously, 21.8 thousand new unemployment benefits were issued.

Despite the decrease in active unemployment benefits, the total number of people who found employment in August, having been unemployed for three months previously, was 232 thousand. This suggests that while some individuals may have exited the unemployment benefits system, they were quickly reabsorbed into the workforce.

The labour force figures, published monthly on our website, adhere to the guidelines of the International Labour Organization (ILO). These figures, along with the unemployment rate, are globally recognised indicators used to describe cyclical developments on the labour market.

It's important to note that monthly figures are essential for understanding cyclical developments on the labour market. Over the past three months, there has been an increase in the number of people who started seeking work from the nonworking population, and who did not find work immediately.

For a comprehensive understanding of the labour market and business cycle, we recommend consulting the Dashboard and Dossier related to these topics, which are available on our website. It's crucial to stay informed about these developments to make well-informed decisions about the economy.
