Kamala Harris Explains Her Decision Against Pursuing the Position of California Governor on Colbert's Show

In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed concerns about the American political system, particularly warning against capitulating to former President Trump. Harris, who lost the presidential election to Trump in 2024, emphasised the importance of vigilance against political figures she sees as a threat to democracy and advocated for active resistance rather than accommodation.

During the interview, Harris revealed her decision not to run for governor of her native California and spoke about her upcoming book "107 Days," which chronicles her 2024 election campaign. The book is set for release on Sept. 23 on Simon and Schuster.

Harris acknowledged that she predicted many of the actions Trump took in office, but did not expect the "capitulation" from those who should be guardians of the system and democracy. She expressed concern about the current political system, stating that she believes it is broken and does not want to return to it for the time being.

Harris also acknowledged the efforts of many good public servants, including teachers, firefighters, police officers, nurses, and scientists. However, she stated that she believes the systems are not strong enough to defend fundamental principles, and she vowed to always be part of the fight to protect democracy.

The cancellation of The Late Show was claimed to be financial by the network, but the announcement came days after Colbert slammed Paramount over its decision to agree to a settlement with Trump. The cancellation drew backlash, with many celebrities, politicians, and fellow late-night legends throwing their support behind Colbert.

Harris's remarks reflect a critical view of ongoing political dynamics, emphasising the need for continued vigilance and active resistance against political figures who threaten democracy. Her stance suggests she views the current state of American politics as fraught with risks from populist and divisive forces, and she calls for a more robust defense of democratic norms.
