In the midst of New York City's ongoing safety concerns, Republican New York State Senator Bill Weber has voiced his apprehensions about the potential impact of mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's victory on the city. Weber, the son and brother of NYPD officers, believes that Mamdani's policies could have a devastating effect on the city's economy and public safety.

Mamdani, a democratic socialist and left-wing mayoral candidate, is known for progressive policies such as Medicare for All, cancellation of student debt, and a push to shift the city’s tax burden onto wealthier, whiter neighbourhoods. However, his stance on policing and Israel has sparked controversy.

Mamdani has been criticised for past calls to defund the police and harsh critiques of the NYPD, describing it as "racist" and "a major threat to public safety." However, in the 2025 mayoral campaign, he distanced himself from these positions, explicitly stating he is "not defunding the police." Yet, he opposes increasing police presence and has called to abolish the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group—a unit involved in suppressing protests—indicating a desire to reduce police roles rather than expand them.

Regarding Israel, Mamdani has been notably outspoken and controversial. He supports the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement and has openly criticized Israeli policies. This stance has broken taboos around criticizing Israel within local politics and has been a focal point of criticism. His critics argue that his positions on Israel and socialism could create fractures within the Democratic Party and alienate moderate voters.

If elected, Mamdani may implement government-run supermarkets, similar to socialist nations that have failed. He has been labeled a communist by some. Many of Weber's Jewish constituents have expressed worry about Mamdani's rhetoric and past stances. Weber believes that a Mamdani victory could lead to chaos in New York City.

In an attempt to prevent Mamdani's policies from being implemented, Weber is advocating for the opposition candidates to unify behind one candidate. He offered to act as a liaison to facilitate a meeting among the opposition candidates. Weber believes it is important to defeat Mamdani at the polls in November.

The recent deadliest mass shooting in half a century in Midtown Manhattan has sparked a bitter war of words between all four mayoral candidates about public safety in the city. Our website Digital reached out to the Mamdani campaign for comment, but received no response.
