Lünen Leads European Mobility Week 2025 With Car-Free Schools
Lünen is gearing up for the European Mobility Week (EMW) from September 16 to 22, 2025. The city is participating as one of three pilot municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia for the 'EMW makes school' project. NRW Minister of Education Dorothee Feller and NRW Minister of Transport Oliver Krischer have jointly taken on the patronage for the event.
Lünen is introducing several initiatives to promote sustainable and enjoyable school journeys. At the Elisabeth School, a 'temporary school street' will be established during the EMW, creating a car-free zone around the school. The 'Playway' action box will be used to design creative and adventurous school routes, making the daily commute to school more enjoyable for students.
The city is also launching the 'Early practice' action at all Lünen primary schools. This initiative encourages students to adopt climate-friendly school routes, fostering a culture of sustainability from a young age. Mayor Jürgen Kleine-Frauns hopes that Lünen's example will inspire other municipalities to create safe and independent school routes.
The experiences and findings from Lünen and the other pilot municipalities will be shared statewide through various exchange formats and documentation. This knowledge exchange aims to expand school mobility management beyond the action week.
Lünen's participation in the European Mobility Week 2025 is set to bring positive changes to school mobility in the city. With the 'temporary school street', 'Playway' action box, and 'Early practice' initiative, Lünen is promoting a car-free, enjoyable, and sustainable school environment. The city's example may well set a precedent for other municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia and beyond.
