Mahatma Gandhi's Grandson to Be Honored at Park University for 150th Birthday Commemoration
In the spirit of celebrating the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth, the Center for Global Peace Journalism (CGPJ) at Park University, in collaboration with the International Relations Council, is hosting two thought-provoking symposiums featuring Rajmohan Gandhi.
On August 26, 2019, at 7 p.m., the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on Park University's Parkville Campus will play host to "Gandhi: The First Peace Journalist." The event will be presented by Rajmohan Gandhi himself, a renowned historian, author, and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Steven Youngblood, the director of CGPJ and an associate professor of communications at Park University, will moderate the discussion, which will delve into Mahatma Gandhi as a journalist and his significant role in promoting journalism for societal development and peace.
The following day, on August 27, 2019, at 7 p.m., Hudson Auditorium at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan., will be the venue for "The Status of Peacebuilding Between India and Pakistan." This symposium will also feature Rajmohan Gandhi, alongside Abhijit Mazumdar, Cynthia Lukas, and Steven Youngblood, as speakers.
Rajmohan Gandhi has been an advocate for peacebuilding for over six decades, with a particular focus on the complexities of India's political history, especially Hindu-Muslim relations. He has served as president of Initiatives of Change International and played a leading role in establishing Asia Plateau, a center of Initiatives of Change in India, in the 1960s and early 1970s.
In addition to his scholarly work, Rajmohan Gandhi has been involved in numerous peacebuilding efforts, including serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, from 1990 to 1992, and leading the Indian delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1990.
Both symposiums are free and open to the public, offering a unique opportunity to learn from and engage with one of the world's leading peace advocates.
