Malayan Capital Markets Introduces Greenhouse Gas Emission Calculator for Small and Medium Enterprises in its Enhanced ESG Disclosure Guide for Sustainable Business Practices
Introducing the SEDG Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculator for Malaysian SMEs
Capital Markets Malaysia (CMM), an affiliate of the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), has launched a user-friendly and free tool called the SEDG Greenhouse Gas ("GHG") Emissions Calculator. This tool is designed to help Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia accurately measure and report their Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions in line with the globally recognised GHG Protocol.
The SEDG Calculator aims to simplify a complex emissions reporting process, making it accessible even for companies with no prior experience in emissions measurement. By using this tool, companies can identify the main sources of emissions within their operations, enabling them to make informed decisions to reduce their carbon footprint and take meaningful climate action.
In addition, the SEDG Calculator supports wider sustainability goals by complementing SC’s efforts to promote consistent and credible sustainability disclosures. The tool also aids the adoption of the National Sustainability Reporting Framework in Malaysia, contributing to a more sustainable and transparent business environment.
To increase accessibility, the SEDG Calculator is available in three languages: English, Bahasa Melayu, and Simplified Mandarin, facilitating broad SME participation.
Dato' Mohammad Faiz Azmi, Executive Chairman of the SC and Chairman of CMM, stated that the calculator simplifies a complex process and enables companies to make informed decisions towards climate action. Navina Balasingam, General Manager of CMM, mentioned that the SEDG has received widespread acceptance since its launch and will continue to help SMEs in supply chains disclose ESG data credibly and effectively.
The SEDG Calculator utilises a methodology that follows widely accepted international standards such as the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It comes with pre-filled emission factors from the IPCC's 6th Annual Report (AR6) for fuel combustion commonly used in Malaysia and emission factors for grid electricity consumption from local sources.
CMM's work is relevant to the regions of Global, Malaysia, and Southeast Asia. The organisation focuses on four key areas: sustainable finance and investing, the Islamic capital market, the digital market, and capital market funding opportunities through the private market.
