Medical College in Dhaka will resume operations on Saturday, with hostels opening a day earlier, on Friday.
Following an 18-day closure, Dhaka Medical College (DMC) resumed operations on July 12, 2025. The college's dormitories reopened a day earlier, on July 11, allowing students to return to their residences before classes resumed the next day.
The closure commenced on June 21 when students organised a human chain protest on campus, leading college authorities to suspend operations indefinitely and instruct students to vacate the dormitories by June 22. However, the students refused to leave, vowing to stay until their demands for safe and adequate accommodation were met.
A student delegation met with the Health Ministry, and the discussions were reported to be productive, which paved the way for the reopening. The reopening announcement was made by Dhaka Medical College Principal Prof Dr Md Kamrul Alam on Wednesday night, 9 July, following an emergency meeting of the Academic Council held on 8 July.
The unrest at Dhaka Medical College had been ongoing for several weeks, causing concerns over potential casualties as students had been living in condemned buildings. Several DMC dormitories, including Shaheed Dr Fazle Rabbi Hostel, were declared unsafe by the Public Works Department.
The reopening decision was made to address weeks of student protests and academic standstill at DMC. The college is now scheduled to reopen fully on Saturday, 12 July, after a period of significant disruption to both academic activities and residential facilities.
