Mohindar Brar Sambhi Endowed Chair position accepted by Anna Morcom in Indian Music
In a fitting tribute to the illustrious career of Daniel Neuman, the inaugural holder of the Mohindar Brar Sambhi Endowed Chair, UCLA is set to host a concert on Saturday, April 28, at Schoenberg Hall. The event will mark Neuman's retirement at the end of this academic year.
The concert will celebrate the life and legend of Ustad Sabri Khan, a pioneer of the sarangi. Admission to the concert is free, making it an accessible and exciting opportunity for music lovers.
The concert programme will start at 8pm, and the venue, Schoenberg Hall, promises an ideal setting for the event.
Anna Morcom, a renowned academic specializing in ethnomusicology, has been offered the Mohindar Brar Sambhi Endowed Chair in Indian Music at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music's Department of Ethnomusicology. Morcom, who is currently a Professor of Ethnomusicology at Royal Holloway, University of London, is known for her scholarly work on Indian and Tibetan musical cultures.
Her work has significantly contributed to the study of creative economies involving cultural craftspeople and performers in South Asia. She co-edited a volume titled Creative economies of culture in South Asia: Craftspeople and performers published by Routledge.
Morcom's most recent book, Illicit Words of Indian Dance: Cultures of Exclusion, was awarded the Merriam Prize of the Society for Ethnomusicology. The prize committee described the book as "an outstanding work of mature scholarship...the breadth of this book is stunning." The monograph was also awarded the Marcia Herndon Prize of the Gender and Sexualities section of the Society for Ethnomusicology.
Professor Neuman is sponsoring this concert as a farewell program. The Sambhi Chair, established in 2005, supports the performance, study, and teaching of the music of India in the Department of Ethnomusicology at UCLA.
This special event is not only a celebration of Professor Neuman's career but also an opportunity to honour the legacy of Ustad Sabri Khan and delve into the rich world of Indian music. It promises to be a night filled with melodious tunes and cultural insights.
