Morocco's GenZ 212 Movement Demands PM's Resignation in Nationwide Protests
Protesters across Morocco, led by the decentralized Gen Z 212 movement, have taken to the streets calling for Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch's resignation. The protests, organized mainly through Discord, are fueled by anger over social inequality and demand improvements in healthcare, education, and governance.
The protests began on Wednesday, turning violent in Agadir where three people died attempting to storm a law enforcement station. However, subsequent rallies in Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, and other cities remained largely peaceful. Demonstrators, including a 20-year-old named Yasser, demand reforms in education and healthcare, citing issues faced at universities.
Gen Z 212, founded in mid-September with nearly 170,000 users, urges protesters to wear black as a sign of mourning for those injured and killed. Despite its significant online presence, the group's leaders remain unknown, with no traditional leadership structure.
The protests in Morocco, sparked by social inequality and recent tragedies like the deaths of eight pregnant women in Agadir, show no signs of abating. With demands for Prime Minister Akhannouch's resignation and reforms in key sectors, the decentralized Gen Z 212 movement continues to mobilize youth across the kingdom.
