NAHB Inspires HBCU Students in Construction Leadership Program
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recently hosted its HBCU Student Leadership program in Washington, D.C. Over 20 students from various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) participated in the three-day event, aiming to educate and inspire the next generation of building professionals.
The program kicked off with students from Lawson State Community College, the University of Maryland - Eastern Shore, and other institutions learning about getting involved with NAHB and enhancing their professional profiles on LinkedIn. They then embarked on an on-site tour in Woodbridge, Va., where they gained insights into the multiple stages of home construction.
The students also engaged in a panel discussion, exploring current trends in construction and their impact on careers. Christopher Smith Jr., a University of Maryland - Eastern Shore student, expressed his interest in pursuing a career as a risk analyst or risk management specialist. Throughout the program, the importance of safety in construction and the proper use of personal protective equipment was emphasized.
The semester-long Student Competition will culminate on Feb. 16-18 in Orlando at the International Builders' Show (IBS). Here, students will apply their classroom skills to real-world project management proposals, providing a tangible opportunity to showcase their learning and potential to industry professionals.
