Outlining an Artificial Intelligence Strategy: Development and Dissemination of AI Standards and Regulations
A Tech & Learning webinar featured Alana Winnick, Greg Bagby, and Joel Lathrop, who highlighted several best practices for addressing AI concerns and planning AI adoption in school districts.
Start with Clear Goals and Needs Assessment
The first step in launching a district-wide AI plan is to identify specific educational goals and challenges that AI tools can help address. This ensures that the adoption aligns with instructional priorities.
Involve All Stakeholders Early
Engaging educators, administrators, students, families, and community members from the outset is essential to understand their perspectives, build trust, and foster a collaborative approach to AI integration.
Focus on Ethical Considerations and Equity
Addressing concerns related to privacy, data security, and algorithmic bias is crucial. Ensuring that AI implementations promote equity and do not exacerbate existing disparities among student populations is of utmost importance.
Provide Professional Development and Ongoing Support
Equipping teachers and staff with training and resources to effectively understand and incorporate AI tools into their pedagogy is essential. Channels for continuous feedback and improvement should also be established.
Implement Pilot Programs Before Full Rollout
Using small-scale pilots to evaluate AI tools’ effectiveness, usability, and impact before district-wide adoption allows for adjustments based on real-world experience.
Establish Clear Policies and Guidelines
Developing comprehensive policies around AI usage, including data governance, acceptable use, transparency, and accountability, is necessary to guide responsible implementation.
Maintain Transparency with the School Community
Communicating openly about what AI tools are being used, how data is managed, and the benefits and risks involved helps build trust and minimizes misinformation or fear.
Plan for Infrastructure and Technical Support
Ensuring that the district has the necessary technology infrastructure and support systems to sustain AI tools effectively is crucial.
Joel Lathrop, Director for Education Strategy at PowerSchool, stresses the importance of preparation for a district to successfully deploy an AI plan. He suggests having an AI readiness assessment to determine if a school district is ready to adopt AI on a wide scale.
Greg Bagby, Coordinator of Instructional Technology at Hamilton County Schools, believes that reaching out to the community is the best way to understand the concerns surrounding AI.
Alana Winnick, Educational Technology Director at Pocantico Hills Central School District, emphasizes the importance of embracing AI as a teaching tool to prepare students for their future. She asserts that AI is not meant to replace people, but to complement the human element.
Together, these practices help school districts thoughtfully address concerns and create a solid foundation for successful, responsible AI integration across schools.
