Over 1,200 Cited in Wisconsin for Ignoring School Bus Signals

Over 1,200 citations were issued in Wisconsin last year for drivers ignoring school bus signals. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and local police enforced stricter penalties during Operation Safe Stop Week.

Operation Safe Stop Week, held from Sept. 22 to 26, targeted high-risk areas identified by the Wisconsin School Bus Association. Authorities conducted vehicle inspections and public outreach initiatives, aiming to reduce illegal passing incidents.

Under Wisconsin law, drivers must halt at least 20 feet from a bus when its red lights flash. Fines have increased to $676.50, and four demerit points are added to the license. The stricter penalties, under Wisconsin Act 154, came into effect to improve student safety and raise awareness about school bus laws.

Over 1,200 citations served during the operation highlight the ongoing issue of drivers failing to stop for school buses. Authorities will continue to enforce the law and educate drivers to ensure safe travel for students.
