Let's get straight to the point! In schools across Saxony-Anhalt, an exciting initiative is underway — students are learning to guide their peers on the responsible use of digital media. The initiative, called "Media Scouts Saxony-Anhalt," was officially kickstarted at the State Institute for School Quality and Teacher Training in Halle, as announced by the Ministry of Education.
So, what exactly are Media Scouts? Simply put, they're your peers who've been trained to help you tackle questions related to social media, data protection, and online communication.
As Education Minister Eva Feußner (CDU) puts it, "Youth often connect better with youth than with adults. They get the latest trends and challenges, and meet on an equal footing." Media Scouts complement the work of teachers, making media education feel more tangible in schools, and turning classrooms into digital savvy zones. "Our schools should be places where young people learn to navigate the digital world with confidence and responsibility," the Minister added.
To ensure every teacher is ready to collaborate with Media Scouts, they'll first complete a specialized Media Scout training course. And students, even those as young as grade 4, are included in the training. The Ministry of Education also plans to establish a statewide network of schools to actively promote digital literacy, lending support to each other. This initiative is a partnership between the Media Pedagogical Advisory Service Saxony-Anhalt, the State Center for Political Education, and the educational initiative "Media Scouts in Saxony."
Saxony-Anhalt, Education, Saxony, and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) are all part of the bigger picture here. Don't forget that this initiative is about more than just social media. The aim is to boost media literacy, providing students with the skills to navigate the complex and ever-changing world of AI, data protection, cyberbullying, and fake news.
