Promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics learning across the board for everyone
The Klaus Tschira Foundation, a leading advocate for natural sciences, mathematics, and computer science, has launched an innovative educational initiative called the Mobile MINT Center. This project aims to bring hands-on, interactive experiences in Mathematics, Informatics, Natural sciences, and Technology (MINT) directly to schools and communities.
Pia Freund, a volunteer at the TECHNOSEUM Mannheim, is currently working on the Mobile MINT Center project. The initiative's goal is to encourage interest and competence in STEM fields among young students by providing mobile laboratories or workshops that travel to various locations.
The Mobile MINT Center integrates digital and analog elements, reflecting children's everyday life, and fosters an appreciation for natural sciences and technology. It typically increases access to STEM education, especially in regions where schools lack extensive laboratory facilities, promoting early engagement with scientific thinking and experimentation.
Alev Dreger, the Klaus Tschira Foundation's education program manager, aims for educational equity with this project. Career orientation projects like "Pick Your Company" and the MINT Lab Leader Certificate are also part of the project.
The Mobile MINT Center has been well-received, with Rita Menczer, a social worker at the Rheinau neighborhood house, praising the workshops. The after-school club at the Johannes-Kepler elementary school allows third and fourth graders to design their own city and learn programming.
The project is a key pillar of the new "innovative education" funding line of the Klaus Tschira Foundation. The TECHNOSEUM has started the project with great enthusiasm and has expanded contacts with various youth centers and schools. The project includes new to-go formats in youth centers, interactive stations at neighborhood festivals, and after-school clubs for elementary school students.
Julia März, a chemist with pedagogical experience, leads the mobile MINT Center project at the TECHNOSEUM Mannheim. For more information, you can contact Alev Dreger, Program Manager Education, at [email protected].
The Mobile MINT Center partners with universities, research institutes, schools, and industrial partners to design and deliver content. These partnerships ensure high-quality scientific input and practical relevance.
