Pupils with mother tongues other than German are enrolled in junior school classes
In an effort to provide a more inclusive and supportive educational environment, the state of Baden-Württemberg has announced the introduction of Junior Classes for children starting from the school year 2028/2029. These classes are specifically designed for children of non-German origin who may require additional support due to a recent move, language barriers, or other developmental challenges.
Preparatory Classes (VKL) will also be established from the 1st grade onwards, offering tailored support for children who need it most. These classes are part of a differentiated overall support system that aims to cater to the unique needs of all children in the state.
Children who need additional support beyond learning a second language will be required to attend a Junior Class. These classes are for children with a non-German family language, and they serve as a preparatory step to build the necessary skills for regular primary education. This group often includes children of migrant backgrounds who lack sufficient proficiency in the instructional language and foundational language skills needed for the curriculum, as well as those whose initial language development is delayed or not meeting age-appropriate standards. Junior classes may also include children with specific developmental or cognitive challenges affecting language acquisition and foundational learning abilities.
The Minister of Culture, Theresa Schopper, has stated that this new initiative is crucial for ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, have an equal opportunity to succeed in education. It is important to note that children of non-German origin are not excluded from Junior Classes, but rather, they are encouraged to attend if they need the extra support.
The Junior Classes and Preparatory Classes are components of a broader support structure in Baden-Württemberg. From the 2028/2029 school year, a larger group of children of non-German origin will be required to attend the Junior Classes to ensure they have the best possible start to their educational journey. This move is part of Baden-Württemberg's commitment to providing a high-quality education for all its students.
