Celebrating Radio Day in Tomsk, Russia: A Rewritten Guide

Russia marks Radio Day annually on May 7th, and Tomsk is no exception. Here's what you can expect from the festivities in 2025.

A Brief History

The celebration of Radio Day traces back to May 7, 1895, when Alexander Popov, a Russian physicist, presented a lecture on the relationship between metallic powders and electrical oscillations at the Russian Physico-Chemical Society in St. Petersburg. He was the pioneer who proposed the possibility of radio communication. The first commemorative events took place in the Soviet Union in 1925, marking the 30th anniversary of the invention. In 1995, UNESCO celebrated the 100th anniversary of radio, following Russia's initiative. Besides May 7, other notable days include World Radio Day on February 13 and International Radio Amateur Day on April 18.

Professionals and Students Unite

In Russia and several former Soviet states, Radio Day is considered a professional holiday for workers in the communication, radio technology, and radio journalism sectors. It is also celebrated by teachers, students, and alumni from radio physics faculties, as well as radio enthusiasts.

Tomsk's Traditions

In various Russian cities, Radio Day traditions are unique and often linked to specific universities. Tomsk is no different. The Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radio Engineering (TUSURE) is the main organizer of the celebrations in the city.

The most notable tradition in Tomsk is the student and graduate procession followed by the tossing of old technology from a university dormitory. This tradition started in 1986 when radio technology students first marched through the streets of Tomsk. In 1988, they added the tradition of smashing old televisions to symbolize technological progress. Since then, this event has grown in popularity each year, with the radio technology faculty's residents annually throwing technology from the sixth dormitory.

2025 Festivities

TUSURE is set to host the annual RadioBOOM festival in 2025. The celebration will kick off on May 7th with the Radio-market. From 12:00 to 16:45, various activities will be held in the inner courtyard of the TUSURE teaching and laboratory building (Krasnoarmeyskaia Street, 146). Visitors will have the opportunity to assemble a radio receiver, learn Morse code, record an audio play, and participate in a papermache workshop to create aunique radio pocket-sized device.

In the evening, at 17:15, the traditional "Technological Progress" event will take place at Dormitory No. 6 (Lyktina Street, 8). Students will toss old technology from the ninth floor, a tradition that has been going on since 1988.

The festivities will culminate in a grand concert at 19:00 on the lower terrace of the Lagerny Garden, featuring performances by Akmal and various TUSURE groups. The event will also feature messages of greetings from the university, the city, and the region on Radio Day.

Additional events on May 6 include the Electronics Fest, featuring a student quiz "How I Met My Dream Job" at the Molodezhny Center of TUSURE (Prospekt Lenina, 46) and a career orientation game "Which Engineer Am I?" for 8th to 11th grade school students at the Institute of Robotics and Power Engineering of TUSURE (Verishin Street, 47).

Please note that the events are open to those aged 12 and above. For the most accurate and up-to-date schedule, it's recommended to check official Tomsk event listings, local cultural websites, or contact the festival organizers directly as the date approaches.

During the RadioBOOM festival in Tomsk, Russia, scheduled for 2025, visitors can engage in educational activities such as assembling a radio receiver or learning Morse code (education-and-self-development).
