Remarkable Old Kingdom Statue Unveiled in Saqqara, Challenging Artistic Norms
A remarkable statue has been unearthed in Saqqara, Egypt, challenging our understanding of Old Kingdom art. The limestone sculpture, dating back to the Fifth Dynasty (around 2465-2323 B.C.), depicts a nobleman, his wife, and daughter, with intriguing details that set it apart from other known works of the era.
Renowned archaeologist Zahi Hawass and his team made the discovery in 2021, which has since been featured in The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology. The statue is the only known example of its kind from the Old Kingdom, showcasing a blend of full three-dimensionality and high-relief carving, a rare combination in art from this period.
The nobleman, whose name is inscribed as 'Messi' on a nearby false door, is portrayed with an advancing left foot, symbolizing youth, vitality, and strength. His wife clutches his right leg, while their daughter holds his left leg and a goose, a common theme in ancient Egyptian art signifying the continuity of life in the afterlife and the importance of family bonds. This depiction of the daughter in bas-relief is unique among Old Kingdom statues, offering a glimpse into daily life during the Fifth Dynasty.
The discovery of this statue, with its distinct style and unique subject matter, challenges conventional understanding of Old Kingdom Egyptian artistry. It provides a fresh perspective on the art forms that existed during the Fifth Dynasty and offers valuable insights into the lives of the people of that era. The statue is now a prominent feature in a study published in The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology, contributing to our ongoing understanding of ancient Egyptian culture and history.
