Saving More Than $100 on Energy Bill This Year through BC Hydro's Team Power Smart Challenge
In the current economic climate, every penny counts, and that includes our electricity bills. That's why I'm here to share how I'm saving some cash on my energy bill with the BC Hydro Team Power Smart Challenge. At first, I thought there was no way I could achieve their targets, but boy was I wrong!
So, what's this all about? Well, BC Hydro has this program where, if you manage to cut your energy use by 10% on average over a year, they'll give you some money back on your bills. That's right, free money! Plus, you'll be saving some dough every month just by being energy-efficient. To find out more and sign up, check out the BC Hydro website: Team Power Smart Challenge.
At first, I thought joining the challenge was a waste of time. As a single person, I don't use a ton of power, and a 10% reduction seemed impossible. But, the prospect of earning a $100 reward was enticing enough for me to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did because I've managed to save energy and money!
Here's how the reduction challenge works:
- Join Team Power Smart by logging into your online account. It's free and easy to join.
- Start a Reduction Challenge and commit to reducing your household electricity use by 10% over the next year.
- If you successfully meet your goal after a year, you'll earn a $50 reward.
Since I'm not one to leave every light on all the time, I had to get creative with lowering my electricity bill. Here's what I've been doing:
1. Unplug unused items
My grandpa always kept the microwave unplugged when it wasn't in use, and I started doing the same for my coffee pot and cordless phone. Who needs multiple clocks and lights running when you're not using them?
2. Turn off the lights
This one's a no-brainer for me, but I started paying closer attention to what lights I left on. I turned off the kitchen light while going about my morning routine, and started using a single bulb lamp instead of the three bulb overhead light in my living room. I barely noticed the difference in light, but I sure did notice the drop in energy use.
3. Use small appliances instead of big ones
I bought a new kettle to make tea instead of boiling water on the stove, and it not only saved time, but also energy. This goes for any small appliances – if you can use a toaster oven or Instapot instead of the oven or stove, you'll be saving energy.
After three months, I've been able to reduce my energy use by 16%, which is way more than I expected. BC Hydro's tracking system and the access to information provided has been a huge help in keeping me motivated. Plus, there are contests for participants and various tips and discounts to further sweeten the deal.
Want to save money on your electricity bill too? Here are some more tips:
- Insulate Your Home: Adding insulation to your walls, roof, and floors can help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, reducing the need for heating and cooling.
- Switch to Energy-Efficient Appliances: Replacing old appliances with energy-efficient models can save you a lot of money on your energy bills in the long run.
- Use Natural Light: Open your curtains and blinds during the day to let in natural light instead of relying on artificial lighting.
- Turn Off Electronics: Unplug electronics when they're not in use to reduce phantom energy use.
- Adjust Your Thermostat: Lowering your thermostat a few degrees in the winter and raising it a few degrees in the summer can save you money on your heating and cooling bills.
Don't forget to sign up for BC Hydro's Team Power Smart Challenge and give it a go! You never know, you might just end up saving some money and the planet at the same time. 🌎💸
