UCLA School of Music: New Scholarships Announced and 2019 Commencement Speaker Revealed

In an exciting development for the UCLA School of Music, esteemed Professor Emerita of Ethnomusicology, Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, was recently announced as the 2019 Commencement Speaker. However, specific details about the commencement speaker and scholarship donors for the 2019 UCLA School of Music graduation ceremony could not be found in our initial research.

For those seeking more information, we recommend consulting UCLA School of Music’s official website archives, their commencement announcements from 2019, or contacting their administrative office directly.

In addition to this news, the university has announced the establishment of two new scholarships that will be awarded next academic year. These scholarships, the Eddie S. Meadows Scholarship in Global Jazz Studies and the Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje Fellowship in African and African-American Music, are the result of generous contributions from two distinguished alumni.

Eddie S. Meadows, a Professor Emeritus of Ethnomusicology and Jazz Studies and Adjunct Professor in Global Jazz Studies, has made a significant contribution to provide scholarship support to School of Music students. Inspired by his experience on the scholarship committee for the Global Jazz Studies program, Meadows established the Eddie S. Meadows Scholarship in Global Jazz Studies to support students in this program.

Meadows also honoured his wife, Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, M.A. '72, Ph.D '78, by establishing an endowed scholarship fund in her name. The Jaqueline Cogdell DjeDje Fellowship in African and African-American Music will support graduate students in the Department of Ethnomusicology.

Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, who taught at UCLA for 34 years, served as the director of the African-American vocal ensemble. Her profound contributions to the field of ethnomusicology have left a lasting impact on the School of Music and the broader academic community.
