Scotland Boosts Efforts to Attract International Students
Scotland is actively pursuing international students to study in its universities, recognising their significant contributions beyond tuition fees. The country has taken several steps to attract and support these students.
In 2024, Scotland launched its first international education strategy and a Migration Service platform to assist international students considering staying post-graduation. The platform also serves employers, recent migrants, and international investors interested in Scotland.
Higher and further education minister Graeme Dey attended the 2025 EAIE conference to promote Scotland's commitment to international education. Rachel Sandison, deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Glasgow, was appointed as Scotland's trade and investment envoy for international education. Sandison works closely with the government to promote Scottish academic institutions and attract more students and staff.
Despite a 12% decrease in international student numbers in 2023/24 to 73,915, Scotland remains committed to growing this sector. Free undergraduate tuition for domestic students makes international fees crucial for university sustainability.
Scotland's efforts to attract and retain international students are ongoing, with the country recognising their importance to universities and communities. The launch of the international education strategy and the Migration Service platform, along with promotional activities, demonstrate Scotland's commitment to international education.
