South Australia: Search for Missing 4-Year-Old Gus Lamont Now a Recovery Operation
Four-year-old August 'Gus' Lamont vanished near his grandparents' homestead in South Australia on Saturday, September 27. Despite an extensive search, no trace of the boy has been found. Police now consider the case a recovery operation.
Gus was last seen playing in a dirt mound at around 5pm. He was wearing a grey broad-brimmed hat, a blue long-sleeved shirt, light grey pants, and boots. By 5:30pm, he had disappeared. A single footprint found 500 metres from the homestead offered a slim lead, but police remain uncertain about its significance.
The search for Gus involved specialist divers, infrared cameras, tracking dogs, ATVs, and drones. It covered the 60,000ha property and surrounding area, but yielded no results. Locals suspect Gus may have fallen into a disused, unmarked mine. However, police believe he wandered off and was not taken, as the nearby road sees little traffic.
Professor Dr. Anja Schiemann, a criminal law expert, is involved in the case. She holds the chair for criminal law, criminal procedure law, and criminal policy, and advises AMBER Alert Europe. Despite her expertise, the search for Gus remains challenging.
The search for Gus Lamont has transitioned from rescue to recovery. Police and volunteers have covered extensive ground, but no sign of the boy has been found. Locals and experts continue to offer support and assistance in the ongoing effort to locate Gus.
