Empowering Female Farmers in Mopti, Mali: A Journey Towards Food Security and Livelihood
In the heart of Mali, the region of Mopti is facing numerous challenges, with many sources of income drying up and a political crisis compromising the security situation. Amidst these hardships, the development organization Welthungerhilfe is working tirelessly to improve the food security and livelihood of female smallholders.
Welthungerhilfe's initiatives in Mopti are focused on increasing agricultural productivity, providing access to resources, offering training in sustainable farming techniques, and empowering women to manage their farms effectively. The organisation is working with 1,500 smallholders from three communities, teaching them how to apply for microloans, organize, and fight for their rights.
The project aims to diversify vegetable cultivation and improve the inadequate diet by training female farmers to cultivate nutrient-rich crops like Moringa. Many of the female farmers are also learning to read and write as part of the project. The women's groups being established are intended to form the nucleus of a new source of strength for rural Mali.
The project is designed for long-term effectiveness, with local representatives in the villages being trained to retain and transmit the knowledge gained. The purchasing power of the beneficiaries is projected to increase by 20%. The region's food crisis is particularly acute, with almost 300,000 people lacking a secure and sufficient food supply.
The female smallholders in the region are constantly fighting to escape hunger. They face numerous challenges, such as difficulty gaining access to arable fields, limited knowledge to represent their interests, and the scarcity of water and suitable equipment for cultivation. With new equipment, optimized techniques, and better seeds, the cultivation is intended to become more effective and offer a secure income for the female farmers.
The project aims to improve the lives of approximately 9,000 people directly, and indirectly benefit an additional 250,000 residents from the three communities. The ultimate goal is to reduce vulnerability to food insecurity and build resilience against shocks such as drought or conflict, which are common in Mali.
