Tea Ceremony Experience: Temporary Event Showcasing Traditional Omotesenke Tea Practice

In the heart of the city, a unique cultural experience awaits visitors from November 20, 2024, to January 22, 2025. The **Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill and Spirit** exhibition, running on Level 2 of the Gallery, honours the timeless art of Japanese carpentry and its harmonious relationship with nature.

This exhibition is not just about showcasing beautiful wooden creations but also delves into the spiritual and philosophical aspects of the craft. One such reflection of this harmony is the Omotesenke tea ceremony, a significant part of Japan's cultural heritage.

The Omotesenke tea ceremony, known as chanoyu or sado, is a centuries-old practice that embodies Japanese philosophical and artistic principles. It is one of the three main schools of Japanese tea ceremony, founded by Sen no Rikyū's grandson, Sen Sōtan, and emphasizes tradition and spiritual connection.

In the context of the Masters of Carpentry exhibition, the Omotesenke tea ceremony could be seen as a reflection of the harmony between nature, craftsmanship, and spiritual discipline. The ceremony often takes place in specially designed tea houses, like the Sa-an Teahouse featured in the exhibition, which showcase Japanese carpentry skills and the integration of natural materials.

The Omotesenke tea ceremony program will take place on select Tuesday afternoons this winter as part of the exhibition. Guests will be treated to an introduction, demonstration, tasting, and Q&A session. The tea ceremony program will be held in the space in front of the Sa-an Teahouse, with guests seated in chairs during the experience.

On December 3 and 10, the Omotesenke tea ceremony will be held, led by experts from the Omotesenke Domonkai Southern California Region. This is a perfect opportunity to reset and recharge through the calming yet inspiring tradition of tea ceremony during the festive season.

Admission to the exhibition is free, making it accessible for all to appreciate the enduring legacy of Japanese craftsmanship and their holistic relationship with the environment. The exhibition hours are from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on weekdays and 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on weekends.

Visitors to the Masters of Carpentry: Melding Forest, Skill and Spirit exhibition will not only marvel at the precision and profound reverence for nature displayed in the carpentry works but also gain a deeper understanding of the spiritual and cultural significance of these creations. It's an experience that promises to inspire and captivate.
