Teacher Arrested for Inappropriate Advances on 10-Year-Old Student
A substitute teacher in Manatee County, Malik Belvin, 26, has been arrested for allegedly making inappropriate advances towards a 10-year-old student at Abel Elementary School. The incident occurred during school hours and has led to a review of background screening processes by the Manatee County School District.
Belvin was assigned to Abel Elementary School for several days when he allegedly pulled a 10-year-old girl into a closet and made an inappropriate request. The victim disclosed the incident, leading the school to immediately notify the staffing agency that employed Belvin. He was promptly removed from the classroom and restricted from teaching while the investigation continues.
Multiple students also reported feeling uncomfortable with Belvin's behavior during his time at the school. The Manatee County Sheriff's Office has charged Belvin with lewd and lascivious conduct.
Belvin has been barred from all Manatee County School District campuses pending the outcome of the investigation. The District is reviewing its processes for background screenings to ensure the safety of its students.
