Transforming the Music Sphere through Internship Experiences

In the vibrant world of music, fourth-year music performance major Madison Dorsett at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is making waves. Dorsett represents a beacon of change, working tirelessly to establish a "new normal" in the industry.

Dorsett's journey began during her first year at UCLA, where she was inspired by percussionist Kristen Klehr. Klehr introduced Dorsett to the idea of being a musician and arts administrator, sparking a passion that would soon transform into a mission.

One of Dorsett's most significant contributions is her role as a founding member and key figure in the Chromatic Brass Collective. This ensemble and community initiative is dedicated to amplifying and supporting the voices of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) female and gender non-conforming brass players. The collective creates performance opportunities, fosters mentorship, and builds a network that challenges traditional exclusionary practices in classical and brass music scenes, promoting diversity and equity.

Dorsett's role within the Chromatic Brass Collective is multifaceted. She currently serves as the Vice President of Operations, with a mission of building a community for BIPOC female and gender non-conforming brass players. The collective includes UCLA alumni, further extending its reach and impact.

In addition to her work with the Chromatic Brass Collective, Dorsett is also an intern at Full Stop Management, a prestigious company that represents globally renowned clients such as Lizzo, Harry Styles, and Gwen Stefani. At Full Stop, Dorsett oversees day-to-day scheduling and budgeting for various projects.

Eileen L. Strempel, the inaugural dean of The Herb Alpert School of Music, was impressed by Dorsett's proactive approach and entrepreneurial spirit. It was Strempel who recommended Dorsett for a summer internship opportunity at Full Stop Management.

The dean's board of advisors at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music shares Strempel's sentiment. One of their goals is to connect students with opportunities that prepare them for careers in the global music business. Dorsett's internships with Full Stop Management and the Los Angeles Philharmonic are testament to this mission.

Dorsett's ambitions extend beyond her current roles. Post-graduation, she plans to continue performing and focus on the Chromatic Brass Collective, a non-profit she helped create. Her goal is to understand how to build musical brands from the ground up, a skill she believes will be invaluable in her future endeavours.

The Undergraduate Student Advisory Board, which Dorsett co-founded in 2020, is another testament to her leadership and entrepreneurial spirit. This board bridges communication between faculty and students, especially in a remote setting, ensuring a seamless flow of information and ideas.

Dorsett finds it empowering to have a voice at the table as the only Black, Indigenous, Person of Color within her cohort. She hopes her work with both organizations will help her understand how to build musical brands from the ground up, a skill she believes will be invaluable in her future endeavours.
